Merfolk are amphibious creatures with a body of a human above the waist, and that of a fish from hips down. They can breathe both underwater and on the land, although they tend to stay below the water surface for the majority of the time.

Some are benevolent and will help those in need, saving a drowning person whenever they can, while others are more prone to mischief like pounding on the hull of the ship and sending shivers down the sailor’s spines as they sing eerie songs.

Most live in underwater cities, caves, and coral reefs, although some decide to venture into the unknown, and those who do tend to have ample opportunities to make their names known, names like Pelagius, Yarrow, Marsious, Farna, and Tertis.

Merfolk are amphibious humanoids with a human upper body and a lower body of a fish. While they can breathe both under and out of the water, they rarely leave the sight of water and go out only to bask in the sun. Their personalities vary as some will save any surface dweller in need of help, while others will go out of their way to trick, lure, or even kill them. There are many stories about Merfolk and you can create one of your own by following a couple of guidelines. Think of where they were born, where they lived, what goals they might have, the reason for leaving their community, and think of a name worthy of the exciting life that they are about to plunge into.
